Villa Maria Fishing Report : Feb 12 to 19 - 2010

This week it was another group of familiar faces. All but one of them had fished the Rio Grande before. They were all experienced fisherman having fished all over the world!

We started the week with some coloured water from last week but it was clearing up and dropping promising a very good week and what a week we had! The “warm up session” brought us a note worthy 22 pounder fish for Gulli and some other good fish.

Towards the beginning of the week we were fishing deep, often using the “lethal weapon” combination of a Snaelda and a leech. Gulli, fishing from the high bank because the river was not crossable, landed a huge hen fish weighting 27 pounds after a thrilling fight! The new seasonal record of Villa Maria. Every week we are breaking a new record!

During the week we faced a variety of fishing situations. We started to fish with heavy lines and big flies (leech, Snaelda, tube fly,…), switching to lighter line and flies and finishing the week fishing with nymph and even with dry flies and hitching! We had great fun hitching flies on the last afternoon as the water temperature rose to 13°C, and the fish were willing to give us a lot of surface action!

We caught a lot of fish with lighter lines, fishing a floater with a sink tip. Almost for the first time this season we could fish with nymphs and rubber leg streamers, no more heavy sinking lines and big leaches.

We had a great week with a lot of fun as the “General”, Botli, and his two friends, Gulli and Jon, put on a show every day and were great fun to be around! We ended the week with a singing party for our last dinner between guides and guests. Each nationality had to sing their song! What a funny party!

92 fish caught for 5 rods;
Average fish per rod per day: 3,12
Average size: 10,43 pounds
Biggest fish: 27 pounds, new record of the season!
8 fish over 20 pounds, and 22 over 15 pounds;
The average weight is 13,09 pounds;
The Top rod and the biggest fish are for Gulli who caught 27 fish this week, including the beautiful 27 pounder.
