One of Ireland’s little secrets is the fantastic fishing in the Boyne Valley. Not only can one fish for wild Brown Trout on true, wild rivers but also share in fantastic Pike fishing on the Lochs. This holiday will appeal to dedicated fly anglers, as you can fly fish for both Trout and Pike. In order to maximise your fishing time we have teamed up with one of the top local guides, who through his many years of fishing these waters, will ensure you are always amongst the fish.
First the Trout fishing; you will concentrate on the Kells Blackwater, this river has all the usual fly hatches associated with a limestone river. It holds good stocks of wild Brown Trout up to 2lbs and fishes well from March to September. In 2004, your fishing guide, with a Brown Trout of 9.75lb, established a new record. This is a great little river and just an absolute pleasure to fish with a light rod and line, either stalking along the river edge or wading. Presenting upstream, dry fly fishing is out of this world and is just what the sport was invented for.
Pike fishing is on Lough Ramor, which covers 800 hectares. It is quite shallow at its southern end, but depths in excess of l0m can be found off its western shoreline. Large Pike have established themselves in the lake and many 20lb fish are frequently recorded. In one day while filming our DVD, between two boats and 4 anglers we landed over 50 Pike, just topping the 24lb mark. Several fish were also caught on the fly, which the fish seem to take freely as very little fly fishing for Pike has been done on this Loch. Accommodation is at Teltown Guest house on a BB basis. Each morning after breakfast you will be picked up by your guide and taken out for a whole day’s fly fishing for either Brown Trout or Pike.
