More than 50 million people visit Spain each year yet you can travel for days and hear nothing but Spanish. Southern Spain has long been a popular place for tourists, but many are now increasingly turning to the fascinations of another Spain, far removed from the high-rise developments lining the Costa del Sol.
Travel is easy, accommodation plentiful; the climate is good all year round and the food and drink easy to come by and full of variety. Culturally, the country is littered with superb old buildings, narrow twisting streets suddenly opening out to views of daring modern architecture and almost every second village has a medieval castle. Spain is not just about high rise buildings and night clubs; you can still find plenty of towns and cities that lie untouched, retaining their own distinctive lifestyle, where the links to old style agriculture still exist. Orange and lemon groves, almond trees, thousands of acres of vines and millions of olive trees can still be found. In some areas it hardly ever rains and this climate is another reason why so many people head there each year for their annual holiday, and ever increasingly, why people are upping their roots and emigrating. In the remote, unspoilt areas of Spain lie some of the best Carp and Wells Catfish fishing anywhere in the world. Over the last few years, fishing on the famous River Ebro has altered individual record books for visiting anglers, as they hook and land their largest ever freshwater fish, surely a momentous occasion and climax of any holiday.
