Some Brilliant Bonefish Fun, On The Flats! Read Petes Xmas Island Daily Blog
We were up and about early today wading the shallow warm flats, in the hope of targeting and catching some Bonefish and GT’s. This is probably one of my favourite types of fishing, as its all sight fishing. You have to be stealthy as your approach your fish, the cast has to be perfect, you have to try and entice the fish, making your fly or imitation crab, perform as naturally as you can. If your cast is wrong, or your too noisy when approaching you risk spooking them. This can be one of the most rewarding types of fishing, but also some of the most frustrating!
Fortunately today the fish were playing ball, and it was Bonefish all round. Both John and Malcolm had there first ever bonefish, after several frustrating hours, John hooked and landed one around 6lb, and Malcolm landed one around 4lb. Me and Kevin also got in on the action landing Bonefish to around 8lb. These fish are unbelievable fighters, pound for pound they must be one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea! If they grew to 200lb I don’t think anyone would fish for anything else!
For the afternoon session we changed tactics a bit, replacing the smaller bonefish flies with things more suitable for some GT’s! Although no one actually landed a GT we had great fun chasing them round the flats, I think everyone had lots of missed chances! The afternoon wasn’t wasted though, as we still managed to land some cracking Queenfish, these are another hard fighting flat fish, and although not massive, fish up to around 6-8lb provided excellent sport. These are always a welcome capture on days like today when your intended target just aren’t interested!
We retired back to the lodge at around tea time and exchanged accounts of each of our days fishing. John and Malcolm had grins from ear to ear, and all they talked about was how tomorrow they wanted bigger Bonefish!
Lets see what tomorrow brings!
Cheers PC
