Seychelles
The Seychelles archipelago is in an enviably gentle tropical latitude in the Indian Ocean, and is made up of 115 islands. The inner core of islands are granitic and include the largest island of Mahé and the capital city of Victoria, where all international flights arrive. The granitic islands, said to be the oldest in the world, hold natural wonders that any nature lover would delight in, and include mountains to rival our British Isles' Highlands.
Surrounding the core of granitic islands are several groups of coral islands, with some of the most spectacular reefs in the world. With this diverse geographic range, Seychelles have a wealth of indigenous flora and fauna to delight the visitor. Realising this is a national treasure, Seychelles maintains a delicate balance between tourism and nature, with conservancy at the forefront in any development – new or established. Because of this emphasis, Seychelles have many more indigenous species surviving and thriving than any other inhabited island group in the world.
The government is keen to promote sustainable tourism and is uncompromising when it comes to protection of its environment. Fifty percent of the total landmass has been committed as National Parks, Nature Reserves or protected areas - two of which have been declared UNESCO world heritage sites, namely Aldabra Islands (the largest Atoll in the world!) with its 150,000 tortoises and Vallee de Mai on Praslin with the Coco-de-Mer, the worlds largest seed. Ornithologists might be lucky to catch site of endemic birds such as the magpie robin, Seychelles scoop owl, black parrot or paradise flycatcher.
An ideal Seychelles holiday would include visits to both the granitic and coral islands - perhaps on one holiday or as a quest that encompasses several holiday explorations to the islands. However you experience Seychelles, you will be sure to find a warm and hospitable welcome from the locals, whose heritage ranges from Europeans, Arab and Persian origins as well as Chinese and Indian. From this diverse background has come a wonderful melting pot that embraces the best of cuisine, music and culture in an idyllic setting. Island hopping is easy by air using Air Seychelles' scheduled domestic flights, by ferries or helicopters and for those with good sea-legs, cruise, charter, or crewed yachts are available. With abundant sea life, tropical gardens and wilds, and some of the most diverse island geography in the world, a Seychelles holiday is a natural. Whether relaxing on the beach, engaging with the environment, or simply soaking up the ambiance, Seychelles is truly unique.
