Panama
Panama is a curious but exhilarating combination of cultural influence, a pleasant mix of Latin mentality and American efficiency.
A country synonymous with the famous landmark canal, it is a nation which, until recently, has been largely ignored by the travellers. Yet Panama is a surprising country, rich in cultural tradition and history, not to mention its outstanding natural beauty; untouched islands, picturesque volcanic craters and tropical rainforest which is said to be the most complex ecosystem on the planet. The climate is tropical, maritime, hot, humid and cloudy with a rainy season (winter) from May – Jan and a short dry season (summer) from Jan – May. Temperature high is in the 90’s and low is in the 70’s. Tourism only began in the early part of the 21st century and, as a result Panama is very much a tourist destination in its infancy. The indigenous meaning of the country’s name is ‘abundance of fish’ and that’s exactly what you will get!
It offers some of the best fishing in Central America and reflects Panama’s reputation as a paradise for Big Game fishing. With areas like the Hannibal Bank which is recognized as one of the best places in the world to catch Black and Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Pacific sailfish and Dorado. Also the adjacent group of islands comprising of the largest island Cobia and the smaller group of islands of Parida, Ladrones, Secas, Contreras, Canales, Jicaron, Jicarita and Montuosa offer tremendous habitat for fish and unmatched inshore fishing action with surface poppers. The explosive strike of the Cubera Snapper inhaling surface lures is an experience the inshore angler will remember for a lifetime. Other species such as Blue Trevally, Jack Crevalle, Sierra Mackerel, Rainbow Runners, Amberjack, various Tuna and a host of other species are available along with a limited quantity of Snook.
