Imagine a remote reservoir, around 85 kilometres long, set in a national park where there's a silence in the air and a calmness on the water, like a giant piece of liquid glass, until is shattered by a striking Snakehead,. Or imagine spending your days jetting over forests completely submerged in water, seeing the treetops from the boat, with thousands of virtually unexplored channels and coves. Well imagine no more for you have found it.

At our reservoir fishing is from small speed boats that have the added advantage of being able to cover large areas quickly. Our guides know all the likely looking spots, where the action can be fast and furious. You can cast either your lure or fly towards the bank or sunken structure, waiting for the glass like water to shatter again. Each day you will set out to a different area with your guide for both a morning and afternoon session, as the heat in the middle of the day, apart from being uncomfortable, is also the least productive time.

Snakehead Reservoir Floating Teakwood House

At Snakehead Reservoir you stay at a small fishing village resort which consists of a collection of simple bungalows floating on pontoons made of silky smooth teak, lovely to walk on in bare feet. In windy weather, the pontoons may be moved around during the day into more comfortable locations, and it’s possible to come home every night to find your pontoon has disappeared over to the other side of the village. You will have a simple, clean room with electric light and a floor fan, a foam mattress with sheets and pillows, and an adjoining washroom come toilet, with cold water.

In this climate, life is mainly lived in the open, so your bungalow has a large covered veranda where you can sit and enjoy a drink and a chat, or snooze in a hammock. Meals at Srinakarin Reservoir are organised by Lek, Francois’s charming Thai wife, and are taken as a group in the floating open air restaurant. The food here is sensational, Thai of course, absolutely fresh, and will consist of dishes such as chicken with cashew nuts, wild boar, wild deer, tempura prawns with vegetables and of course the famous Tom Yum soup. Think Chinese food but a little lighter and spicier, and you have the idea. Western and local beers and soft drinks are available and cheap. You’ll get back from fishing, wash and change, drink a beer and a Thai feast will be waiting on the table. You may even have a very special treat if you are there at the weekend – Thai karaoke.

3	Depart early morning with your private transfer from Bangkok to Snakehead Reservoir. Stopping on the way at Kanchanaburi for sightseeing. You will arrive at Srinakarin Reservoir early afternoon. Visit a Mon tribe market at the Burmese border Note the transfer is 5 hours in well appointed air conditioned vehicles. Once you arrive at the reservoir you and your guides will pick up your teak house and tow it to the fishing areas. Overnight accommodation: floating Teakwood House F/B
4 to 8	Breakfast is served at the house from 5.30am. Full 12-hour day fishing at Snakehead Reservoir and using speed boats enables us to get to the best water quicker, all with your own private guides. Overnight accommodation: floating Teakwood House B/B

The technique for Snakeheads & Jungle Perch is casting the lure in zones where you think the fish could be waiting for its prey, like you would spin for pike at home, casting to submerged trees, weed beds, small channels and so on. The snakehead is a fish that loves living on the bottom, but it is attracted by surface vibration and sounds; so every imitation of fish, frog or mouse presented on the surface, is the perfect lure for this preditor fish.

RODS: Bait casting or spinning rods 6'2" - 7' - medium/heavy or heavy action

CASTING REELS: Should possess fast retrieve and have capacity to handle 30/40 lb braided line.

BRAIDED LINE : Big size Giant Snakeheads make light work of monofilament. Braided line is a must. Your braided line should be of 30 to 40 lb strength.

HOOKS & SPLIT RINGS: The strongest stainless treble hooks and split rings are highly required.

TOP WATER LURES : The best top water lures for those preditor species are handmade here in Thailand by local Snakehead specialists. By experience, the T.Surf and the Addy lures are the very best of all. These lures are imitations of frogs, mice and small fish. Snakeheads are attracted by surface vibration and sounds so propellers of various size are added in front of the lure. We have been trying various models of foreign top water lures through the years but they don’t work too well on the Shado. Except for the Luhr-Jensen company “woodchoppers” (medium size model for the Peacock Bass) and poppers (9cm Rapala skitter pop or Yozuri) that can be also very effective.

RAPALAS: Rapala 11 FT MAG (fire tiger) and J 13 FT (fire tiger) are my old time favourite lures but all the models below can be real "killers".

SPOONS: Due to their heavy metal construction, spoons can be cast for long distances. And with a fast retrieve they make Jungle Perch strike more ferocious (silver shiny things are best). Snakeheads eventually go for them too.
