| Salmon Fishing On The Gaula River |
     |
 |
 |
The Mighty Gaula, Europe's Finest Salmon River.
The Gaula river is statistically the best Salmon river in Europe, famous not only for the numbers of salmon it produces (between 6500 and 8000 annually) but also for the high average size (around fourteen to eighteen pounds). A fly fisherman's dream, every cast into the Gaula's clean, rushing water brings with it the possibility of a take from a 40 pound plus Salmon (several fish of this size are caught every year).
We offer several miles of double bank fishing, some 20 km up river from the village of Støren and approx. 70 km from the sea. The whole beat is divided into ten pools, virtually all of which produce high numbers of Salmon. Gaula is special because the pools are long (750 m average), allowing anglers to wade and fish over a considerable distance. The fishing rotation system divides sixteen anglers into eight groups of two. Anglers fish in pairs and fish a new pool every six hours until, having covered all ten pools, the rotation begins afresh. Fishing is possible on a 24 hour basis, in high summer, and with four pools to fish every day, anglers can choose to fish for as long as they like.
What our customers have to say:
- "Big powerful river with powerful Salmon, Great holiday, Gillie's and the lodge was right on the mark and a big thank you to Jacob and his family for making us feel like home." Matt Halls
- "Fantastic Salmon fishing highly recommend it."John Walker
- "Thank you to all the staff and the gillie's for taking good care of us. The 8 hours a day Grilling is defiantly worth the extra as the fishing is so different to Scottish and Irish rivers. " Paul Mercer

The Winsnes Lodge is owned and run by Anne Marit Winsnes and her partner, British tv angler, Matt Hayes. Jakob Winsnes, Anne Marit’s father is chairman of the local fishing board and the main host at the lodge. The atmosphere at Winsnes is friendly and informal - guests are encouraged to come and go as they please. Help is always on hand for guests who want assistance with their fishing equipment, advice about the river, fly choices etc., The lodge also intends to open a fishing tackle shop in 2007 offering guests the opportunity to buy top quality fly patterns and other essentials such as lines, clothing, tippet etc.
With highly developed catering facilities, Winsnes is famous for the quality of its food – a mixture of traditional Norwegian and international cuisine. British touches can be seen on the menu – British tea and marmite at breakfast being prime examples!
Winsnes was built in 1882. From approx. 1890 to 1910 the house was used for the English ‘salmon lords’ who began to visit the Gaula during this period. A number of pictures and other paraphernalia can still be seen from this period. Built form traditional Norwegian wood, the house has been extended and modernised with a large ground floor kitchen, a spacious dining area and lounge. In high summer, most guests sit outside in the courtyard to sit and chat, drink wine or gin and tonic. All six bedrooms are on the first floor with shared or single occupancy possible. Some but not all of the rooms are en-suite. There is one toilet on ground floor and two toilets, showers and bathroom on the first floor.
Guests will be well looked after. Packages are full board, comprising breakfast and dinner with the opportunity to make your own packed lunch from the large spread put out at the breakfast table. While two guides work the sixteen rod rotation, additional guides are provided for Winsnes customers, with one guide working eight hours a day for two anglers. Casting tuition is available and guests can take the opportunity to learn the Scandinavian ‘underhand style’ of spey fishing. Winsnes experts will be happy to advise about fly choices, fishing tactics and anything else that will improve your chances of catching salmon. Non-fishing guests and families will be able to choose from a list of activities and are very welcome at the lodge too. The lodge will have a licence to serve alcohol in 2007 but guests should be advised that alcohol is expensive in Norway and it is advisable to bring duty free drinks with you.
Other attractions include Röros (A UNESCO’s World Heritage listed town) Located on a mountainous site, its history is linked to the exploitation of copper mines, discovered in the 16th century and used for 333 years until 1977. Completely rebuilt after its destruction by Swedish troops in 1679, the town includes some eighty wooden houses, most of which are grouped around courtyards. Many of them still retain their dark pitch log façades which give the town a medieval aspect. The church tower is a very famous landmark.

Alternatively a reel loaded with running line for shooting heads, with a variety of different heads for underhand casting.
Dressed flies covering sizes 12 through to 4 and a selection of tube flies from about half inch to two and a half inches complete the essentials.
Local flies are mainly black, green and orange mixtures and silver bodied flies are popular.

General Gear
Aside from the regular type of clothing and personal effects that you would bring on any holiday, we have included a list of often-overlooked.
• A light rain suit for the occasional shower
• Polarized sunglasses (2 pairs) Amber, yellow, green or grey (I highly recommend Action Optics Eye Ware. You won’t find better glasses!)
• Sunscreen and lip protection (15 or higher and waterproof)
• A good fishing hat that will both keep the sun off you as well as cut down on glare (dark billed)
• Camera with film
• Extra batteries
• Insect repellent
• Extra light clothing for fishing when the sun is out. Consideration should also be given to warmer clothing for cooler days (The weather in Norway is simple. When the sun shines its warm when it’s overcast its cold because you are fishing rivers that are in valleys)
• Good walking shoes
• A travel alarm clock
• Band-aids
• Zip lock bags
