Chilliwack in British Columbia is home to the famous Fraser River; well known for its Sturgeon fishing. Regardless of all the stories that have been told, nothing can prepare you for the excitement of seeing your first massive Fraser River Sturgeon leap clear of the water before embarking upon a frenzied 250+ metre reel screaming run. The reel empties, perhaps for the 2nd or 3rd time and the anchors are released as you start to follow the fish downstream. These fish will test you and then push you some more! After 45 minutes plus you feel the fight will never end. The lactic acid has built up, it now burns the muscles in your arms; your head is sweating; but it does end and all the pain leads to sheer elation as you land a fish, heavier and like no other you have ever seen before. This is big, deep fast river fishing at its very best. You’ll be using powerful quality tackle, fishing from superb boats in stunning surroundings. You’ll see eagles, perhaps bears and vast log rafts. You’ll see numerous Salmon and Sturgeon leaping out of the water and best of all you’ll see the rod tip twitch a few times then slowly pull over in the holder, signalling the start of another epic battle! The Fraser River is British Columbia’s largest river. Beginning as a trickle at Mount Robson near Jasper National Park, it tumbles Northwest to Prince George where it swings abruptly southward to make its way to the Pacific Ocean. Before it does, the Fraser travels nearly 870 miles and is joined by Nechako, Chilcotin and Tompson and Harrison rivers. During the Fraser’s southerly Journey, it begins to pick up speed and incredible volume. At French Bar Canyon it begins its journey into steep, high-sided canyon walls, swirling back-eddied and frothing white-water. Especially significant is the point in the Fraser known as ‘Hells Gate’, a narrow canyon created by a blasting accident that funnels the water of the Fraser into huge waves and white water. After Hells Gate, the river chews through solid rock walls until it reaches Hope where the walls of the canyon subside and the meandering flood plain of the Fraser Valley begins.
