Jewie / Jewfish / Mulloway fishing holidays
Scientific Name Argyrosomus Japonicus

Other Names Jewfish or Mulloway

World Record 28.60kg

Description

Jewie / Mulloway are mostly silver with a blue/grey, green, or bronze coloured back. However sometime when caught these fish can be really dark to bright yellow/ golden in colour. Its believed that this fishes colouration is effect by diet and depth. They possess a line of silver/white spots that follow the lateral line and sometimes have a black mark at the pectoral fin base.

Habitat

Jewie / Mulloway are usually seen on offshore reefs, but also live in shallow estuaries. In Australia this species is recorded from temperate marine waters of southern Queensland around the south of the continent and up to the central coast of Western Australia. These fish live in coastal environments, including the lower reaches of rivers, estuaries, rocky reefs, ocean beaches and embankments and the continental shelf out to 150m. Adults are generally found close to the estuary floor or around shallow coastal reefs or rocky shores. Jewie / Mulloway are more prevalent in and around the mouths of larger rivers and embankments, especially after periods of high summer rainfall.

Feeding Habits

Jewie / Mulloway are predatory fish feeding mainly on small fish and crustaceans. Small juvenile Jewie / Mulloway eat mainly small shrimp. As these fish grow in size they become more solitary preferring to hunt alone. They are often found in holes, gullies or near reefs / reeks, where they are provided some sort of shelter to attack their prey from.

Age and Growth

Mulloway spawn in coastal waters close to beaches. Eggs develop at sea and the larvae spend several months as part of the plankton, drifting with ocean currents. When they reach about 10 cm the young move into estuaries where they grow rapidly. Young Mulloway in estuaries are sometimes called 'soapiest'.

Tackle and Methods

Jewie / Mulloway can be caught mainly with fish strips or live bait. Live bait tends to attract and catch the larger specimens. These fish give a very strong fight and often test the angler and there tackle. You need to match the tackle with the size of fish you expect to catch
