Description
Blue salmon are aggressive
feeders and active fighters once hooked.
Blue threadfin grow to at least 120cm
(18.5kg). These fish are sexually
mature at around 98cm in length. They
are silvery-blue along the back graduating
to silvery-white on the belly. The
pectoral fins are yellow with three
to four thread-like filaments located
below. The forked tail is dusky grey
and the dorsal fins and tail are trimmed
with blue-black. They are distinct
from king salmon in having fewer and
shorter filaments.
Habitat
Blue salmon are marine fish
and inhabit mid to bottom waters.
They can be found in estuaries and
muddy rivers and occasionally enter
freshwater. They can be found along
the Queensland coast from Noosa in
the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
They are often found in association
with mangroves, and form small schools
in feeding and spawning habitats in
coastal shallows.
