Located near Terrace, British Columbia Canada is a little gem of a secret until now that is, for located right on the banks of the Kalum River is Kalum River Lodge.
From this lodge, which now has exclusive access points to both the upper and lower Kalum River you have fantastic fishing but also you have access to fish the world famous Skeena river system for Steelhead, King, Coho, Pink and Chum Salmon. Fly fishing for Steelhead on the Skeena is considered by many to be the best Steelhead fishing in the world, as this watershed holds the world record for both Steelhead on the fly and with conventional tackle. As well as having the worlds largest run of wild Steelhead, the Skeena also holds 2 world records for King Salmon. A 92lb and then a 99lb caught just recently. At Kalum River Lodge 3 King salmon have been landed over 60lbs in the last two fishing seasons as well several Steelhead over 20lbs. It is no wonder Fly fishermen all over the world have come to the Skeena to test their skills against these magnificent fish and tried to keep it a secret for so long.
The fishing season begins in April and finishes in early November. Spring runoff brings fresh runs of Steelhead into many of our northern rivers. Spring Steelhead average 10-14lbs with the occasional fish over 20lbs. July brings the big Kings; the largest of the salmon species. By mid July, sockeye and pink salmon are starting to arrive in large numbers. Early August the Skeena has all 5 species of salmon as well as the Steelhead. The Steelhead is migrating up the Skeena in large numbers through mid September. With fish on record over 30 lbs, any angler has the chance at a fish of a lifetime. From early September the rivers are filling up with Coho (Silvers), providing excellent fishing as well as incredible wilderness scenery.
