Futa Lodge, Trout Fishing, Patagonia, Chile

overview
Futa Lodge is located in the most secluded valley in the Patagonia. Absolutely the most romantic lodge in the world which sleeps a maximum of six anglers. With its remoteness, stunning mountains, and free rising, very obedient brown and rainbow trout, this will feel like a dream.

Fishing at Futa is like stepping back in time... The countryside is reminiscent of Montana or Colorado at the turn of the last century. The magnificent Coyhue forests around the lodge have seen no felling of timber and the fields are still cut with scythes. Fishing itself is some of the purest wild fly-fishing for rainbows and browns anywhere in the world. Each and every trout that you catch is a perfect representation of its species.

The fishing at Futa lodge is largely based on the Futaleufu River which flows right by the front door of the lodge. In addition there are some smaller rivers close by that are fished and also some local lakes. The Browns and Rainbows of the Futaleufu River and the catchment as a whole were stocked from European and American stock in the early 19th Century. The fish in particular have gone on to establish an extremely healthy population that is the envy of wild trout fisheries the world over. The river has a multitude of different types of water and styles of fishing. One minute your guide will be rowing you down vase stretches where you will fish a streamer to overhanging trees to tempt big browns from their hiding places and the next minute, you will be fishing from the bank having stalked a wary pod of rainbows as they sip tiny dry flies from the surface.

The fishing season officially opens in mid October and runs until the first Sunday in May. The best dry-fly fishing generally occurs from January to the end of March, although November and December are great spring months and very large trout on the move, generally taken on steamers, can make an angler's dream come true. March brings cooler mornings and evenings and the rivers reach their lowest volume, but the cooler days bring the truly big fish out of the lakes and into the rivers for spawning. The pre-spawn streamer fishing can be incredible from mid March to mid April. Those who want many big fish will endure fishing the shorter days in April, to have an experience of a lifetime going after very large trout with large dries.

Any duration of stay at Futa Lodge is welcomed. The typical daily fishing programme is flexible but will normally start after breakfast at 8/8.30 am. Shore lunches are the norm followed by fishing in the afternoon until evening. Seasonal changes will take into account the changing light but early season fishing may be as late as 10pm with late season as early as 7pm. The Lodge is staffed with professional, local and international, English speaking guides; trained in first aid and C.P.R, all of whom are qualified casting instructors. Quality custom built fishing Rafts with swivel-ended frames Fore and Aft are provided, as are 4WD double cabin vehicles.

The Futaleufu valley is a place to be close to nature and to be part of a way of life that is increasingly hard to find anywhere in the world. It is a place to forget the mundane pressures of everyday life, whilst enjoying some of the world's best wild trout fishing and staying in comfort and style at Futa lodge. For those who want to, we can also make horse treks to the river from the lodge, which is a real treat as you can admire the scenery and wildlife at a slow pace without the engine noise that scares away birds and animals.
