EBRO CATFISH
As the road snaked through scenic bends, it dawned on us it was just over 4 hours ago we were in cold, damp England. We are here for a long weekend to film our Catfish DVD on the famous River Ebro. It’s times like this that you realise with modern day travel just how small the world has become, only a few years ago it took months of research, planning and preparation for any foreign fishing trip. Lying ahead of us was 2 days fishing and filming.
Our first day was more like home, overcast with cool winds, however, we still managed to produce seven boated cats up to 98lbs. What a difference a day makes, as the second day was such a contrast with clear blue skies, hot sun and not a breath of wind. Around lunchtime we moved swims, the bait had not been in the water more than 15 minutes when the left hand rod started to knock. Dwaine suggested that I hit it, as it’s probably just a small cat. On picking up the rod I had to reel down and down as the fish had moved a long way. As the line started to tighten a firm strike confirmed a fish was on. Immediately, the fish charged the far bank before changing direction to the opposite bank (not bad for a small cat!) we all knew it had to be one of The Ebro beasts. Fifteen minutes later deep boils and large bubbles surrounded the boat just as we caught a glimpse of a huge tail followed by an unbelievable head seven foot later. Dwaine made no mistakes in thumbing the catfish first time; the scales confirmed our thoughts, my first over 100lb settled at 134lbs. As per tradition the beers were on me!! Or were they?
Just as dark was approaching Martyn hit a positive take and it immediately became apparent we had hooked into another monster. It was dark by the time the huge catfish was lifted into the boat, what a sight it looked in the moonlight as she was quickly lifted onto the scales to rest at 141lbs. What a way to end two day’s fantastic fishing/filming and get out of having to buy the beers!!
