Finally We Arrive On Christmas Island & We Are Straight Into Some Fish!

blog story: Finally We Arrive On Christmas Island & We Are Straight Into Some Fish!
After the 3 hour flight we arrived on Christmas island, and everyone was eager to un pack, get sorted and get out for some fishing, after all that’s what we were there for! We hatched a plan for the afternoon session, and thought we would have some fun with some poppers.

We arrived at our first mark after a short 20 minute steam, and it wasn’t long before we were into fish, with some nice size GT’s all round, mixed in amongst the GT’s we also had some nice tuna, nothing massive but fish up to around 40lb.

About an hour and half into the first session I hooked something big, a huge Gt crashed into my surface popper and screamed off at an incredible rate, taking 30-40 yards of line on its first run, I battled with the fish for a good 10 minutes or so, it stayed deep and tried many times snag me on the rocky bottom. Just as I thought I was starting to win the battle, the fish made another powerful run and the hooks pulled, everything went slack it was gone.

Gutted! It would have been nice to see it, as I am convinced it would have been my biggest GT ever, but that’s fishing. With the rest of the trip still ahead of us, I feel confident we will get amongst some more of these. As the light started to fade, we headed back to camp, with the first day on the island complete, with all the travelling over the last few days really taking its toll, I am sure I will sleep well tonight! I think tomorrow the plan is to the flats for a spot of fly fishing, see we can catch some of the Bonefish, which Christmas island is famous for.

Untill tomorrow…. Peter C
