Escorted Mahseer Fishing Cauvery River Galibore Camp India
fishing overview
Fishing for Lords, Gentleman and Kings.
Each year Angling Direct Holidays head guide Dave Plummer escorts a limited number of anglers to exclusively reserved stretches of Southern India's most famous river, the Cauvery, in search of the mighty Mahseer (a legendary fighting fish that can grow to over 100lb in weight). These fish are famous for being able to strip a reel bare of 40lb line on the first run and can easily swim upstream, against rapids, at over 20 knots; a truly spectacular sight amidst splendid scenery. These escorted trips are designed for either groups or single anglers, for each week we restrict the camp to only 10 anglers. If you are either experienced or this is your first time Mahseer fishing with Dave Plummer’s expert guiding and our pre trip information you will be sure that you are only fishing the river in the right place, at the right time and with the correct fishing tackle.
The stretch we fish is the Galibore area which is the furthest fishing stretch downstream and has the deepest and slowest moving water. The best fishing time is mid Jan to mid Mar when the water level drops and the fish stay in the deeper pools. The Mahseer gives a terrific fight and has earned the reputation of the river tiger. The Cauvery River is well protected and therefore attracts anglers from all over the world, some returning year after year, others for their first time, hoping to do battle with the great golden Mahseer. We have the fishing rights to about 40km of the Cauvery River and this consists of various pools, each with its own name. The camp has a maximum number of 10 anglers but we can also accommodate more non-anglers. Each day you will be taken to different fishing spots by coracle or by walking along the bank. A typical fishing day is normally; 6.30am wake-up with a fresh tea or coffee, 7.00am go fishing; 12.00 return for brunch, time to just chill out during the hottest part of the day, 2.30pm coffee and tea, 4.30pm go fishing, 7.30pm return to camp, 8.15pm dinner and beers.
This year we really started to see the pay back for the continued protection of the Cauvery River. As by working with our partners in India the money, we pour in to this river section each year of which a proportion is used to pay guides to be present all year to protect from poaching has resulted in record number of caught fish. (Best day was 52 fish caught with some anglers returning with over 100 Mahseer) What was even more encouraging is the numbers of fish present in the 20 to 35lb range, as last year these fish were only around 15 to 20lb, which means all the fish, and their environment is continuing to improve.
Numbers of big fish are also on the increase, as each week we see big fish hooked but unfortunately normally lost. However, customers have had fish up to 87lb in 2009 which is still a huge fish; in fact, a Mahseer over 40lb is considered a good fish and during our group trips our customers had over twenty 40lb fish.
For 2010, we have listened to all your feedback and after the success of changing our Dave Plummer Florida holidays to 1-week segments; we have planned to do the same for India 2010. As you can see from the dates listed, it is now as simple as picking the week you wish to fish or in the case of customers who still prefer longer durations the weeks you would like to fish and then contact us to reserve your place. What’s more is again due to public demand we have changed these tours to allow you if you so wish to arrange your own flights allowing those with air miles to book reward flights and also control the dates you depart and arrive. So now, you can also spend as much or as little time in Bangalore at either the beginning or the end of your fishing weeks.
So if you are considering a India trip, want more information or wish to reserve a space (As availability is still limited) please feel free to contact us at anytime.
