Cod Group Trip
Escorted Cod Fishing Soroya Norway
Another great escorted sea fishing holiday hosted by our Paul Stevens to Check out this escorted fishing holiday hosted by Paul Stevens to “The Land of the big fish”. Home to the real monster Cod, but why do they call it “The Land of the big fish” Well it’s no surprise when the fishing is as varied with fish approaching the maximum size possible for their species in these nutrient rich waters surrounding Sørøya. The cod fishing is truly exceptional and in 2008 more than 10 fish weighing over 60lbs were caught - The biggest cod of the season weighing in at an astounding 75lbs! To give you some idea about the fishing in Sørøya Cod around the 20k mark are considered small and quite often are released quickly with out pictures so the angler can get back down to try and catch a more trophy size fish. Again this trip will be based on a group of just 10 anglers with 5 per cabin and per boat, both Paul and one of our Norwegian full time guides will captain the boats allowing you to concentrate on getting amongst the fish.

Day Three Some Happy Halibut Hunting!

blog story: Day Three Some Happy Halibut Hunting!

Second days fishing today, and after yesterdays halibut we were all keen to get out and try and get a few more! We were all up and about around 7.30, which was plenty early enough for me! After a quick breakfast we were all on the water for about 8.30.

Heading out west again we fished the mark from the previous night, the plan to fish there for the first few hours of the tide, then move on to a couple of spots further down the fjord.

We were into a few small fish straight away, with Graham ‘Rocky’ Ellis catching the first Halibut of the day, a small one but a welcome sight all the same. We fished on for another hour or so, before heading further out into the fjord. With the weather and conditions first class, it really was a pleasure to be out, even though the fishing was a little slower than usual.

At around half four, we were all getting a bit twitchy, as it looked like the day was going to be disappointing, but as we all know sometimes that can be fishing…

Moving back up the fjord, we settled in a couple of shallow bays, with everyones arms aching from a relentless, unproductive days pirking, we decided to rig up a couple of deadbaits and the plan was to slowly drift these along the bottom. A couple of coalfish deadbaits were rigged up on pennel rigs and lowered a few metres down to the bottom.

After a couple of missed takes (adding to the frustration!) one of the rods went off on the ratchet and we were in! Mike Deavin, doing battle with a cracking Halibut of 43lb! After a couple of quick pictures, with Peter Kettringham (I think Mike was suffering from fatigue! ;-) ) the rods were back out ready for another! It wasn’t long before Halibut number three for the day was being boated, Peter Kettringham getting one of his own, this time the fish weighed in at a respectable 15lb. One more Halibut graced the boat, a smaller one around 5lb, along with a couple of nice Cod for ‘Rocky’ Ellis and Paul Rawding. For all the anglers this really was a cracking end to a hard day! As we pulled up at the moorings Halibut number five for the day was just being lifted from the boat, the other lads had been in amongst the fish once again (fishing a different area to us) with there second halibut over 50lb in as many days! Great stuff all round, and time for a celebratory drink or two! After probably one of the spiciest Chilli’s in the world, we settled down for another couple of drinks and a chat to ponder over todays fishing.

Tight Lines Chris...
