In Florida yesterday guide Dave Plummer took the boys out to fish the back country, here's Darren 'Breg' Bremners report of how they got on. It sounds like they had a great day and amongst a few nice fish...
Thursday
Rob and I elected to go for a days backcountry fishing today and what a day it turned out to be! We started off with some light tackle jigging over some mixed ground and picked up mangrove snapper, ladyfish, baby black tip sharks, Spanish mackerel, catfish, and speckled trout to 4 1/2 pound. Much as I've found when mackerel fishing for bait at home, it was hard to stop and move on to the sharks but we did.
Once getting set up, it wasn't long before the first shark bit and Rob was into a nice 80lb black tip. We had another 2 around the same size all of which put up a good account of themselves. As the tide was on the turn Dave put us onto another of his marks, where I had previously had a good bit of luck on another trip, so I had high hopes for this spot and I wasn't disappointed! After missing the first bite I got another shot and caught a 175lb bull shark which went tearing off across the flats meaning that we had to go on the chase, lovely fish with beautiful colourings. Rob was back up next and he got a spinner shark which gave an awesome aerial display before coming to the boat. I had the last fish of the day which again was a spinner shark but rather than jumping this one just ran but we were soon on top of it and had it released.
Going to the backcountry was definitely the best option for today as 10 minutes after we got back a thunder storm came through which would have made tarpon fishing a little uncomfortable tonight.
Instead we're off out for a meal in one of the many nice eateries in the area and then for a few beers, not too many though as Dave is going to take me to try for a tarpon on the fly in the morning. I'm told that this wee storm is a 'good sign' so fingers crossed for tomorrow.
