Darren 'Breg' Bremner sends us his last fishing report with Dave Plummer in Florida. He had a go at targeting Tarpon on the fly, read how he got on...
Hi Pete,
The fishing has been quite hard this last couple of days with only the one fish yesterday right at the end of the session. Dave reckons it's probably down to the lack of wind, which he hates, and the full moon switching the fish off. We saw a few fish yesterday morning which I was able to cast to but they just weren't interested, that and my casting was perhaps a little bit heavy handed. Using a 12wt rod to cast fairly large flies and present them as delicately as if it was a small dry fly being presented to a brown trout on a beautiful Scottish loch was very challenging and a challenge I can't wait to try and overcome. During the evening session I did get one take on the fly but it was very gentle and I wasn't able to strike quick enough, even the 2 takes on the crab were gentle and very difficult to notice. All the same I hooked up to the second take and landed the fish in the picture that was about 110lb.
We were up with the lark this morning and out at 4am to see if the fish were feeding in the dark but, although there were plenty fish moving they just didn't want to take the crabs were offering. I guess that's why we call it fishing and not catching!
I'm sure that once the full moon is over the tarpon will be back on like they were at the beginning of the week so I'm sure that the next groups are in for some serious fun, just the same as I've had. Dave has, as usual, been an absolute gent and not only been putting us on the fish but sharing his wealth of experience on fish fighting techniques, fish care and general know how. I for one can't wait to fish with Dave again and for sure will be heading back to Florida.........soon!
Thanks to all at Angling Direct Holidays for making another one of my dreams come true, I'll be in touch soon to see about organising my next angling adventure of a lifetime!
Darren
