Christmas Island

Christmas Island is world-class, with miles of coral sand, iridescent lagoons, coconut palms all coupled with a simple gentle way of life. In fact it’s an Island time has forgot.

However what seems like one of the smallest places on earth is actually a geographical giant. It’s the world’s largest coral atoll with a total area of 248 square miles, 125 of which is land and the remainder, stunning lagoons. The island rests just above the waves on an ancient reef; a result of an undersea volcano thrusting it three miles up from the ocean floor. At 2,015 miles from Tarawa, capital of the Republic of Kiribati; 1,335 miles from Honolulu; 4,000 miles from Sydney and 3,250 miles from San Francisco, it’s no wonder it has been left relatively behind by modern life. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back; the local people are both friendly and helpful, greeting you with big smiles as you walk through the town. It only takes a few days and all your worries seem to be forgotten as you melt into the island way of life.

Activities that bring people to Christmas Island include; amazing bird watching, the crystal clear waters that provide fantastic snorkelling / diving and of course the world famous saltwater flats and reef fishing that surround this atoll. There’s Bonefish and the mighty Giant Trevally, some of which can run over 100 pounds. More common are the Blue and Giant Trevally in the 10 - 35 pound range that will demonstrate an impressive surface strike on a wide variety of streamers and surface poppers. These Trevally are not considered selective feeders, they are very aggressive and will voraciously attack anything that looks like food. Overall, the conditions on Christmas Island are ideal for flats fishing. The consistent and predictable weather makes it an ideal fishing destination year-round. All in all this makes this a must see worldwide fly fishing destination.
