With the Air Pacific flights back on shortly to Christmas Island this fantastic destination will soon be back on the radar for all anglers who are looking for a real sense of adventures.
Out of all the places I am fortunate to visit and fish this still has the special touch for me, its just something about how basic and rustic the fishing is. In fact apart for Bonefish fishing and chasing the GT’s on the flats it is still relatively un explored and open to lots of opportunities for those anglers who want to think outside of the box and explore.
Over the last few years that I have visited and guided to Christmas Island every time we discover new marks and just how rich the fishing is on and around this island, yes the Bonefish fishing is great but there are lots of places with good Bonefish fishing and easier to travel to than Christmas Island. It is the Giant Trevally’s, Bluefin Trevally’s, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish and even Marlin that we have came in to contact with while exploring this island on both mixture of lures and flies that makes my heart beat each and every time the plane approaches the small airstrip on Christmas Island. On my last trip we even encountered huge huge groups of big Milk fish and guess what did we have any Milk fish flies…No and believe you me after studdying these fish and following them for days they will be definatley on my radar for the next trip.

One thing that has become evident over the last few years is the time on the island was far too short, that is why in October 2010 we return with a whole 13 days fishing. We are going fully equipped to fly fish for all and every species, we are also taking large poppers to fish and tease the GT’s along with something that has never been tried before 50lb and 80lb class trolling equipment to see just how many Sailfish, Marlin and big Tuna are out there. If we can get things right we even plan trying some switch and tease, something I have done many times big game fishing around the world but never in Christmas Island.
Is it going to be easy? Simple answer is no, the fishing is easy, but faced with the basics like no game boats as such we will have to take everything with us and both make and rig things up while over there. (That’s allot of gaffer tape, pipe etc) But that is the appeal.

Where else in the world can we start the morning popper fishing for GT’s, Tuna and Sailfish with in just minutes of setting off? Then move a little offshore only approx 2000 yards yes 2000 yards to do some trolling for Tuna, Marlin, Wahoo etc, try some switch and teasing and then if that’s not enough when the tide is correct turn back inside on to the flats and hunt the huge GT’s on the fly as they start to move on to the flats looking for Bonefish to eat. Not bad for a days fishing.
Now as an added bonus, not sure if you have seen the news about the massive monster Bonefish being caught wadding around the flats in Hawaii? Well guess what its on route and we have a 2 day stop over on the outward Journey. Are we going to be sunbathing on the stunning beaches, surfing the famous surf. No we are going to be wadding the flats with the top guides hunting these 15lb plus Bonefish monsters.
Sounds like after all this we are going to need some rest time, so guess what the clients have requested so we have planned a 2 day stop over in LA to see the sights and sounds of this crazy town. Let’s just hope that the fishing has been so good over the trip, that we actually feel that we have won an Oscar. (Well we should get one at least for effort)
I have 2 places left on this dream trip, so if you are an exploring angler and what to take the rough with the smooth, this is your chance of a lifetime. Do not miss it.
