Hosted Casa Blanca Fishing Lodge Ascension Bay

overview
Ascension Bay on the Yucatán Peninsula needs no introduction to any serious saltwater fly fisherman, for this place is famous for its Permit fishing around the world. As many as 56 Permit have been caught on the fly in a single week. There has also be 10 Grand Slams (a Permit, a Bonefish, and Tarpon, all in one day) caught in just one week, so if you ever wanted to target Permit and try your luck at a grand slam Casa Blanc has to be the place.

It was with this in mind that we have decided new for 2011 to host weeks led by Jack Simpson one of our top saltwater fly fishing guides. Jack has just returned with a longtime friend Richard from their first exploratory trip and could not find a bad word to say about the operation.

The area surrounding Casa Blanca is wild, virtually uninhabited and extraordinarily beautiful. There are miles of shallow bays, secluded mangrove-rimmed lagoons, white sand beaches, and dense coastal jungle. Bonefish fishing is conducted amongst the mangroves and sand flats, although not a destination to catch big Bonefish the fish at Casa Blanca tend to be bigger than average for Yucatán Peninsula due to its closeness to the ocean. The Tarpon fishing is mainly for residential Tarpon and therefore do not get much above 60lb, also even though there are plenty of Tarpon to cast to when trying to complete a grand slam, we would not want to consider this a primarily Tarpon destination. However if you are looking for a destination with more Bonefish and Permit than you can throw a stick at you need to look no further.

(E) 2 checked in items 23 kg (B/F) 3 checked in items 23 kg. Note: although you have an international allowance the restriction will come from the internal flight so please travel light.

Internal Flight

You will be flying into Casa Blanca in small, chartered aircraft that do not have anywhere the luggage space that you do on normal commercial flights. Please limit your baggage to one larger, soft-sided piece of luggage and try to keep the weight of all your clothing and gear to 45 lb. (not including your carry-on rod case) Remember that the dress is completely casual at the lodge, so you won't need a lot of clothes. If there is too much baggage to bring in by plane, then they will have to send it by boat from Punta Allen, and this can take up to 6 hours or more.

TRANSFER TIME

Casa Blanca Airstrip - Casa Blanca Lodge

(approximately 3 minutes by boat from the main lodge. There is a short walk from the plane to the boat dock, so change into your boat shoes before departing Cancun. Insects can be a problem on the airstrip because it is protected from the wind. Pack your insect repellent where it is handy. Or, when you arrive, walk immediately from the plane to the small pier at the end of the runway where the breeze will alleviate the problem.)
