A good week of fishing has ended at Bella Vista lodge:
At the beginning of the week, the river conditions were slow, although you could tell something was brewing in the Andes Mountains because the river rose two inches during the day and twenty-four inches during Sunday night and started to change to a darker color. These conditions forced us not to fish for two days but when the river grows in this way, the fishing activity is impacted for a few days, but at the same time it triggers fresh runs of fish to enter from the estuary.
We are excited by the change in river conditions!
In those three days fishing, we hooked 18 fish and we landed 16. The biggest fish of the week was 17 lbs, and we had 3 fish over 15 lbs. And also we landed a total of 52 brown trout with an average weight of 3.3 lbs.
River Conditions: The water level was high at the beginning of the week and then it started dropping slowly every day. It is still the color of a strong tea for the moment.
Water temperature: between 7 ºC and 14.3 ºC.
Water clarity: Quite dark because of the big rise at the beginning of the week.
Water level: After the big rise it dropped for the whole week.
Fishing Conditions: We caught some very nice fish and we ended with an average weight of 11. 4 lbs!
We caught 16 sea trout bigger than 7 pounds, we lost 2 and we also caught lot of resident browns in the main river.
Fly lines used: We used only floating lines (PowerSpey Versitip and Skagit Heads) with type eight tips. The last day we could fish before the flood, type fourteen or super fast sink tips were necessary.
Fishing Techniques: The water was flowing fast enough that simply jigging or stripping the line slowly imparted plenty of action.
Fish: Big fish for the week: 1 of 17 lbs, 3 fish between 15 and 16 lbs, and many smaller fish . Average weight: 11.4 lbs. Very nice!
Conditions of the fish: Most of the fish this week were very fresh. Only a few fish were turning.
