Alaska must be one of, if not the best location within the world to catch Salmon. The sheer numbers and size of Salmon shocks even the most travelled of anglers.
The Ayakulik River is located within the Kodiak National Wildlife Park, 125 miles southwest of the town of Kodiak on Kodiak Island. It is just perfect for fly fishing, about 30 yards wide with average depths between 3 to 4 feet and deep pools every 200 yards. The crystal clear water and the lack of vegetation on the banks make it one of the best rivers we have ever seen or fished. The terrain is fairly easy to walk, although expect to walk two to four miles per day fishing along the way. There are some skiffs available but the fishing is mainly all done from the shore. Catch statistics for the lodge are simply amazing, with weekly catches in excess of 300 King Salmon being the norm for only 12 anglers.
Salmon available are King, Sockeye and Steelhead in June and Coho, Silver, Pinks, Char and Steelhead in August. We have two lodges at this remote location on the mouth of the Ayakulik River. Each lodge can accommodate 6 anglers and although basic, come complete with hot showers, mains electricity and is full board withfhearty home cooked meals comprising of beef, turkey, ribs and of course plenty of fresh fish. Another great thing about this location is it is blessed with an almost total lack of mosquitoes and other insects.
