60lb Mahseer & Minor Surgery... It Can Only Be Dave Plummers India Blog!

blog story: 60lb Mahseer & Minor Surgery... It Can Only Be Dave Plummers India Blog!
As I said in my last report, the first group have been and gone and the second group are here and have wasted no time settling in and catching a few fish.

With the cold evenings cooling the temperature of the river, I thought this may have effected the fishing, but with the group landing over 40 fish, on the first day this obviously hasn’t been the case! The catch was topped by two cracking Mahseer landed by Bill Rolfe, fish of 31lb and 21lb, really put the icing on the cake. Now people who read my reports regularly will have noticed that Bill Rolfe was also in my first group, and that was the case, but Bill enjoys the fishing on the Cauvery that much, that he always spends a whole month over here!

While Indian regular Bill was busy catching fish, another Indian regular and good friend Colin Belton, was catching things of a different kind…himself! Somehow managing to impail the Rapala trebles in to his hand. After some minor surgery from myself, (Doctor Dave Plummer!!!) and my trusty unhooking pliers I managed to unhook the specimen and release him back to the wild! Things didn’t get any better for poor Colin when he needed a second dose of surgery from Doctor Dave! This time, the Rapala trebles embedding themselves in his arm! After hooking a Mahseer estimated in the 50lb bracket, he guided the fish all the way to the shallows, only for the hooks to pull out and fly back directly at him, talking a perfect hold in his arm! Just to make things even worse Colin also managed to not hook! Four other takes throughout the day, surely things couldn’t get any worse…..

No they couldn’t as the next day Colin was back with a bang! This time swapping his cursed Rapala for a Crab bait, fishing a deep pool on the edge of some turbulent water, Colin hooked and this time landed the biggest fish of the second group, taking a cracking Mahseer just over 60lb. Was is it they say… the sun always shines of the righteous! He also managed another 2 mid doubles to go with it.

The river has dropped to a good level now and the fish are really on the feed, Mick Collum landed a couple of crackers, one of 33lb and one of 25lb, this brought up the 100 fish mark, not bad for only 3 days fishing!

Fingers crossed it carries on!

Tight Lines Doctor Dave Plummer (Sorry Colin, I Couldn’t Resist!!!)

P.S I have attached a copy of last weeks fishing report so you can see the exact facts and figures! Don’t forget if you fancy a week out here, get in quick as the places are selling fast. With the fishing so good it’s really no wonder why!

P.P.S I have also been told about another letter in one of the weekly fishing magazines, again misleading anglers about the situation in India. Why these magazines can not get their facts correct before going to press amazes me, just goes to show they are not worth the paper they are written on.

The fishing in India is not banned; the rivers are not being poached to death, in fact after guiding in India for over 18 years I believe the fishing and organisation has never been better. With less camps open and as we restrict the anglers to our camp to just 10 the fishing is top level and due to the reduction of anglers running around up and down the river, I have never seen so much wildlife.

Stories about fishing and then being told by the forest commission that fishing is banned along the whole stretch is simply because these so called anglers were caught fishing the restricted areas and when that happens yes, fishing gets banned for 48 hours for everyone. So you see, fishing is not banned completely it’s only in protective areas and as usual it’s the minority who are so desperate to catch fish at any cost to improve their image who ruin it for everyone.

Another point you may read about is people fishing more than 1 rod and in some cases 3 rods. How desperate are these anglers? With the guides we had to spend the 1st week cleaning discarded lines from out of the river, where these anglers ended up getting takes snagging their other lines so they just cut them. No wonder they have never caught any big Mahseer as this is a recipe for disaster and only fuels the activist’s argument to ban angling.

Fish with 1 rod and keep holding it at ALL times and you will both hook every take and more importantly stand every chance of landing that dream fish.
